What is Kommunlotsen?

Kommunlotsen helps you find which of Sweden's 290 municipalities suits you best, based on what you find important: tax, schools, safety, jobs, housing costs and more. You weigh what matters and get a personal match score for every municipality. The quiz is in Swedish; the rankings and municipality pages are also available in English.

How the match works

Each slider (0–5) says how much a topic matters to you. Within a topic we normalise a municipality's value against all 290 (best of them = 1, worst = 0, linear in between), then take a weighted average over the topics you gave a weight. Some measures, such as size of town or average age, are not good or bad in themselves, so they work as choices ("younger", "older") that only affect the match if you actively pick one.

The match score is Kommunlotsen's own calculation. It does not come from any of the sources below and should not be read as an official grade. "Sweden" next to a figure on a municipality page is also our own population-weighted average.

Data sources

Everything is fetched about once a month, not in real time. There is no server and no database, only static pages built from open data. Last update: 20 September 2026.

• Kolada

  Key figures for Swedish municipalities and regions, compiled by the Council for the Promotion of Municipal Analysis (RKA) and SKR. Free to use, including commercially. Licence: Open data, commercial use allowed.

• SCB (Statistiska centralbyrån)

  Statistics Sweden, the national statistics agency: house prices, population by country of birth, average age and more. Licence: CC0 1.0.

• Jobtech Dev (Arbetsförmedlingen)

  The Swedish Public Employment Service’s open job-ad API, run by Jobtech Dev. Licence: Open data from the Swedish Public Employment Service.

• SMHI Öppna data

  SMHI open data: weather station measurements, used for average temperature. Values are processed by us: annual and monthly averages from the nearest weather station. Licence: CC BY 4.0.

• Wikidata

  Municipality identifiers, coordinates and links to Wikipedia. Licence: CC0 1.0.

The full dataset can be downloaded as CSV and JSON under CC BY 4.0 on the open data page (in Swedish; the files and column ids are language-neutral).

Which years do the figures cover?

The most common year across municipalities. If a year is missing for one municipality we use its latest available, so a few can be older.
